Another of my favorites in Utah. This is a terrific drive but I recommend traveling here in Spring or Fall since it is the desert after all. Get out and walk if you can because the arches are so inspiring. Also, try to time it so you're there at sunset. Seriously great.
This is one of my favorites areas. It is located near the four corners of Utah, Colorado, AZ & NM. Truly phenomenal colors & rock formations. Small fee to get into the park & I believe you can also ride horseback during some parts of the year.
there is nothing like standing on the edge of a cliff so high that it doesn't even look real! as spectacular as it looks in photos you've seen, just wait till you see it in person!
Was here on a cross country road trip. After eight hours in the car we just sat at the edge at stared for over an hour in complete silence. The canyon itself is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide!
I remember riding on the back of a donkey on the way down the canyon saying, wow, this cannot be so incredible and wow, I hope this donkey actually knows what he's doing. Fantastic ride & worth every bit of soreness later!!
The old red light in the window trick to let you know it is a brothel... obviously, this section of Amsterdam has a whole lotta red lights. Great place for uh, costume ideas!
Somehow every time I've made this drive I've screwed up and ended up driving at night...and yet somehow it was still stunning. Not a ton of diversity in it (not like you'll be going through lots of towns or residential areas), but it's still gorgeous.
PCH for me is home. Yet every time I drive it, I catch my breath at its beauty, changeable nature (in color, sounds, reflections) and true majesty. It is practically in my back yard but something I never take for granted.
I've been to Milan several times for business and although it isn't the most beautiful in Italy, it is still a lot of fun. Most memorable for me was the shopping and the Opera House.
Since I grew up in Utah, I gotta stress that most of Lake Powell is in Utah and not Arizona. Okay, got that off my chest. No matter which side you enter the lake, it is an experience to to be missed! I definitely recommend a trip to Costa Rica. The wildlife is incredible and the people are so warm & friendly. You can easily travel the country if you choose. Definitely on the mucho tourista side, I still think this place is a lot of fun. They have a long happy hour and usually a long wait, but when in old town... do as the tourists do and have a good time at the Mexican Cafe.
If you've never hugged a tree, this might be the place you give it a shot. You'll be sure that trees are people too once you take in the true majesty and chapel-like feeling here of peace and awe. Definitely worth a trip.
Terrific city to visit no matter the season, Sun Valley is adjacent to Ketchum & the two are practically intertwined. Good celebrity watching as well as skiing. Big hot spot of spiritual seekers/yogis as well.
Hard to imagine, but Lewis & Clark actually bypassed Yellowstone Park. Must have been in some hurry. Great to visit here in winter & explore via snowmobiles. Such a vast & incredible park.
This stylish design by Michelangelo Buonarroti resembles a lotus flower and is located at the top of the Capitol. No surprise this one be a critical element in the urban planning of the overall development. The mastermind? Michelangelo.
Great day trip from Venice via a water taxi (vaporetto). Located near Torcello at the northern end of the lagoon, this town is known for its colorful houses & lace.
At every turn in this gorgeous city is a hidden plaza or architecture showcasing Roman, Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, or Baroque styles. This city is an architecture lovers paradise!
This royal palace was actually originally a Moorish fort. It's a very popular tourist destination and the upper floors are still used as a residence for the royal family.
It has bunch of years since I stayed here, but it was a nice place with good rates. They had recent renovations & I love the look of their new pool & sundeck.
This leather souq was truly one of the most unbelievable sights I've ever seen. It is the oldest tannery in the world (and btw, has a very intense smell), but still uses ancient techniques. You can watch men standing (stained) in enormous vats as the dye the leather. Truly mindblowing.
This was one of the most hauntingly important visits I ever made. Such a well designed museum whose mission is to to illuminate through Anne Frank's story, all forms of prosecution and discrimination.
You gotta love the Italians. Turns out the Loggia (or New Market) is known for the symbol of the wild boar due to the Italian expression meaning to "have your butt on the ground." More translation? Flush out of money & broke!
This castle has literally seen it all beginning with the Romans and then on to the Kings and Royals and that whole search for the Crown of Scotlands incident (don't ask). The most visited site in Scotland.
One of the most inspiring sleepovers I ever had was on a sleeper car train from Venice to Paris. I remember waking up to the brisk, incredible air of the French Alps & thinking it was the perfect way to travel, even if a little cramped.
This sign is perhaps the only thing I remember from my last trip to Vegas! Interestingly, this sign actually sits in the town of Paradise (vs. Las Vegas proper) and is also considered to be the official southern end of the Sunset Strip.
Known as the Gateway to the Himilayas this is a great city if you want to visit an ashram or get some spiritual help via the many sadhus (spiritual seekers) who are everywhere. And funny, but my best friend had her bag of fresh peanuts "snatched" by a monkey on the bridge.
I was here a bunch of years ago for the SXSW Film Fest and had an absolute blast. Loved Austin and the incredibly real and vibrant music and film scene. Great time & a great trip.
This eco-tourist luxury hotel is about an hour and half from Puerta Vallarta. They just did a major rebuild and reopened their doors. I heard it's spectacular.
I just got a thrill when I saw this pic because I had one of the best vacations of my life here!! This is a romantic, beautiful eco-resort lit by candlelight. Your room has its own rowboat. You order your coffe (terrific by the way) via the rope pull inside and a flag is raised outside. I've come to Joshua Tree several times, mainly because I am so enthralled with the Dr. Seuss-like trees and the rock formations which date back millions of years. It has a very mystical, other worldly feel and is definitely worth the trip.
Right in the heart of the desert, no surprise that Jasalmer is known as the driest place in India. I actually rode a camel here and trust me, it was a blast and I had a big drink of (bottled) water after I reached the end. Camel didn't seem to care.
Known as the blue city due to the many blue houses near the Mehrangarh Fort, it is also known as the Sun City which is in direct contrast to the fact that much of the film The Dark Knight Rises was recently shot here in Jodphur.
Interesting, but I think this is probably my favorite airport in the world (hmmm, wonder why). Where else do you get to pick up your bags outside while accompanied by the thick, sweet scents of plumeria. Quite a greeting.
Definitely check out Nepenthe next time you're in Northern Cali. The family history at the Nepenthe Restaurant is particularly incredible. I highly recommend their colorful cookbook because it is filled with terrific stories (recipes are probably great as well) & history.
I was here quite a long time ago but it is still so memorable. It was the middle of winter and I was with good friends over a weekend from NYC. I remember the friendly French vibe coupled with the true beauty and vibrance of the city and walking for miles in mounds of snow. This innocent looking walk actually has some surprises including rough terrain along the shoreline and some twisty turns. Wear some good shoes and enjoy the salty air.
Leave it to those rich neighbors the Vanderbilts to come up with the perfect "summer home." This house is one of several Vanderbilt houses in the area that combined Beaux Art architecture with classic New York townhouses. A historic landmark. Of course.
So you guessed it, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere wins by a landslide for perfect date spot, even if you're going on 50 years. If things are getting too familiar just say to your partner, Hey Honey, want to step out on the ledge? You'll be safe. Glass boxes keep you safely inside.
I highly recommend taking one of these cruises. I did so on my first visit to Amsterdam. When traveling solo (or otherwise) I like to get the "lay of the land/water" early in my trip so on the boat ended up meeting terrific people who I later met for art excursions, etc. and it was true travel I highly recommend taking one of these cruises. Everyone seems to want to be in this town, beginning with the American Indians (4000 years) to the gold miners to the jazz singers (Ray Charles included) to the rockers (Nirvanna, Soundgarden). Perfect place to make your mark.
It's seedy, loud, garish, bold, run-down and completely not PC. Go there and have fun. I recommend seeing a sexy show because decadence and rough edges seem to be the very point of the Moulin Rouge. Watch your belongings though.
Of all the nutty hotels in the world, this one would get my vote for nuttiest. The rooms in this legendary hotel run the gamut from "Caveman" to "Daisy Mae" to "Sir Walter Raleigh".
I loved it here and rented a white cadillac in Los Angeles and drove it up the coast in order to arrive appropriately "dressed" at the Madonna Inn. I got the room called Stairway to Heaven. There was a spiral staircase right in the middle and yes, there were clouds everywhere.
