Absolutely stunning park that most tourists never see. I wouldn't go here at night as it's a little out of the way, but it's well worth seeing. It was created in 1867 out of an old quarry. Very, very hilly in comparison to the city's other parks.
This, in my opinion, is one of Paris' most interesting places and certainly one of its most interesting parks. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor actually maintained a house in the Bois where I believe they lived out their last years. Sounds weird, but this store has the best rooftop terrace with tremendous views of Paris; right next to Opera. And, there's food up there. Just ride the escalators all the way to the top.
Can you imagine what those two would do if they have a room full of mirrors to themselves? They'd have to rename the book 50,000 Shades of Grey. Anyway, this was one of many stops on their honeymoon.
It's seedy, loud, garish, bold, run-down and completely not PC. Go there and have fun. I recommend seeing a sexy show because decadence and rough edges seem to be the very point of the Moulin Rouge. Watch your belongings though.
