If you are considering getting out of town for BBQ, skip Salt Lick and head to Lockhart, TX, largely considered the BBQ Capital of Texas.

This is an absolute must! 15-20 minute drive south of downtown. It's cash only by the way. They make their own wine there and have a bocce ball court as well.

Tasty Italian cuisine done by someone who really knows how to do Italian.

A European-style fry and sandwich shop featuring their namesake Belgian fries that are fried in, you guessed it, duck fat.

My dad lives in Portland, so when I visit this is one of my favorite places to get dinner. The ingredients are locally grown and raised and delivered fresh every day.

Obviously you'll have to time it right, but if you're up for it, this place makes for a great destination wedding! They even have a chapel here that's been blessed by the local parish. Given the changing nature of the hotel, however, don't expect it to look exactly the same from year to year.

In addition to the novelty of having a giraffe occasionally peek through the windows, this hotel is an absolute stunner. It was built in the 1930s and has a wonderfully cozy charm about it. This is definitely on my bucket list.

Amazingly, this scene is the rule, not the exception at the aptly named Giraffe Manor so make sure you have some treats handy!
