Thanks JR. We are staying in Hermosa Beach, so we'll make sure to check those two spots out. I've got my fingers crossed for nice weather so we can enjoy the beach.
If you make it down to hermosa and the weather is nice, I'd say rent a beach cruiser and take a cruise up the Strand. Stop for a drink along the way Poop Deck (old school dive bar) in Hermosa, Simmzys (gastro pub) in Manhattan Beach are two strong choices. I'll add those too so you have them. That's a great day for a local (I live here) so I'd recommend it for anyone visiting.…see moresee less
I LOVE this place. One of the romantic dinners F took me too when we were first dating. The ambience is fantastic, the food delicious, the sake selection incredible, overall, a great night out.
You're lucky you're visiting during off-peak season because the line is usually obscene! You shouldn't have any trouble going at any time during the day (but afternoons are always best).
It is FREE to visit Hancock Park and the La Brea Tar Pits. There is a fee for the museum. Metered parking is available on 6th Street or on Wilshire (9 am to 4 pm only, read signs carefully). Paid parking is available behind the Page Museum off Curson, or in the LACMA garage off 6th Street.
Park at the foot of the mountain by Vermont Ave and Los Feliz Blvd and hike up the road to the observatory (stay on the left side). And you can't miss the planetarium shows (super cheap at $5/ticket). They've got three, and the most popular one is "Centered in the Universe." Another uber romantic hot-spot. The Farmer's Market has a plethora of great food options and for relatively cheap. They also have karaoke night sometimes, too. Woot for free entertainment!
I was psyched to see they had the Wee Heavy! The bartender talked Mom into a peach flavored beer that he described as "Beer Candy". Everyone came away happy.
The good: it's free. The bad: parking's $15. Park on Veteran Ave (east side of the street) between Sunset Blvd and Gayley Ave and take the Metro Rapid 761 (Pacoima) North on Sunset by Bellagio Way. Bus fare is $1.50 and takes only 7 minutes, dropping you off at the Sepulveda entrance.
I'd recommend this over the Santa Monica Pier since it's probably going to be freezing and cloudy at this time of year. At the end of 3rd St. is the newly renovated open-air mall which is quite gorgeous and has a very nice food court with fancy schmancy restaurants at the top level.
