It may be super touristy here, but I still love it. Pro tip: team up with friends and grab bread at Acme, cheese at Cowgirl Creamery, salami and/or pate at Boccalone, and wine at Wine Merchant, then go to the back of the building and picnic on the benches overlooking the water and bridge.
This is a must for anyone visiting the area. Camp here if you can. Hike and picnic if that's all you have time for. It's one of those special places on the planet you'll never forget.
It's said that this was formed by a cave collapse in 263 A.D. Today it's used frequently by stunt fliers trying to get through the narrow opening. Amazingly, there are 999 stairs leading up to the top. I feel bad for the guy who had to count them; must have needed to start over many, many times!
This is a GREAT visit. Just try and get there early morning for most activity. If you land in the afternoon, the bison will be chilling out due to the high sun. Also, hit the California Academy of Sciences while you're there, as well as the Japanese tea garden right next door! One of my favoriteThis is a GREAT visit. It's a clothing optional beach, but being in San Francisco weather, most people opt to wear clothes anyway. It's a lovely beach with a really nice view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The crown jewel of the drive is Theodore Roosevelt National Park which I-94 passes straight through. I was able to see more wildlife from my car in this national park than I have in any other in the US.
The highlight of the drive are the Twelve Apostles, which are sandstone pillars just off the shore. You had better vist them quickly because they have been falling down ever few years due to natural erosion.
Consider walking around the south side of the walls around the Vatican, seeing the relationship of the piazza to that area... There's not much north of the Vatican except a touristy shopping district...
Takes at least half a day if not longer. But ABSOLUTELY worth it. Make sure you do a guided tour. Well worth the price. If you're hiring a car from Pisa airport, don't wait for the shuttle bus, it's only around the corner to the right. This will save you a big wait in the shuttle queue.
Jumping from a boat into the huge waves to get to hot springs beach was most memorable: "You can't do this in the US," said hubby thinking about safety standards.
This is a spectacular waterfall, especially in the spring when water levels are the highest. Hike up is fairly easy, however it gets crowded on the trail, so it won't feel totally "adventurous".
