This incredible underground palace served as the setting for the Russian consulate in "From Russia With Love." Legends about the upside down position of the heads are numerous, although the prevailing "belief" is that Medusa's head is upside down to negate the powers of gorgons.
It is open. The hotel rooms are being remodeled and will be reopened for business shortly. BUT more importantly, the long term residents are there, staying and will not be losing their homes.
This is where writer Dylan Thomas supposedly drank his last. I love this place because it's so emblematic of the late 20th-century architecture so common in this part of town.
I wouldn't stay here, necessarily, bu the upstairs bar/lounge has one of the best views in NY. Its on my have to do list when in NY. If the weather is great, the views over the Hudson to the Statue of Liberty are epic. Great place to start a night out in the meatpacking district.
One of the greatest aesthetic playgrounds ever created, but sadly they don't allow skateboarding through the galleries. (THAT would be sooooo AWESOME if they did IMHO !!!)
The good: it's free. The bad: parking's $15. Park on Veteran Ave (east side of the street) between Sunset Blvd and Gayley Ave and take the Metro Rapid 761 (Pacoima) North on Sunset by Bellagio Way. Bus fare is $1.50 and takes only 7 minutes, dropping you off at the Sepulveda entrance.
