National Thrift Shop Day: NYC's Best!
Ask any New Yorker and they'll tell you that the city's thrift shops are like none other. To celebrate U.S. National Thrift Shop Day, we're paying a visit to the city's best. Happy Hunting!
One of the tiny handful of NYC thrift shops I've not been to yet. I've heard the bag sales here are incredible and that there is lots of vintage to be found.
The prices are a little higher here but the selection, especially for furniture, is excellent. Make sure to go downstairs to look for clothing bargains.
I'm not sure what charity this place benefits but I'm also not sure I care. The prices here are excellent and the furniture in particular is fantastic. My only complaint is that they seem to close at odd times, even if it's just to go get lunch. It's a relative newcomer to the NYC thrift shop scene but it's probably the best one in town. Carrying almost exclusively vintage items from clothing to furniture, this place prices everything very, very fairly, and you can pretty much always find a treasure here. The windows here are so well-dressed that there are times when they could easily give the windows at Saks or even Bergdorfs a run for their money and it's worth coming here for that reason alone. One of the few bookstores I enjoy as much as The Strand. Great place to spend a rainy afternoon looking through the stacks. They know what they have so don't expect a major bargain. This place can get seriously crowded on the weekends and for a very good reason. This is a GREAT place to get a real bargain (not $5 a bag-bargain, but say, DVF for $50 bargain). This can be an easy one to miss since it's on a side street but try not to. I've found some great vintage pieces here and a gorgeous Lanvin box. Great for things like scarves, purses, etc. and a generally lovely staff.
The truth is, there really isn't a bad Housing Works thrift shop (I mean if you don't count the staff's rudeness), but this is one of the better ones (and, I have to say, the only one where the staff has had rare moments of courtesy). Does your local thrift store have a loading dock this size? If it doesn't, you need to come here. This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite thrift stores in NYC. It's only been open for a few years but they manage to amass a fantastic selection of merchandise, much of which is Bergdorf-worthy. That said, last time I was there I snagged a pair of never-worn Le Chameau boots that retail for about $170 for about $30. Also, the staff couldn't be nicer. If you're looking for something specific and they don't have it on the floor, they'll go see if they have it in their stockroom. They also keep it totally immaculate. At first glance you may wonder why I said this place was so great. Only in New York would anything think to "curate" a Goodwill but that's what Goodwill has done here. They've hand picked the best items that come through their doors and brought them all downtown. This is one of my favorites because it's a total wild card. Some days they have everything from Chanel to Prada and others it's all 70s pant suits. Like the Sloan Kettering store, this place is old school, but if you're willing to do some digging you can really find some gems. It's narrow and it can be a tad cramped but if you've got the patience it's worth it.
You're probably more likely to find an Ungaro dress here from the 80s than a cool bowling shirt from the 50s. The merchandise here is good but very, very Upper East Side old school and not wildly cheap. It's the kind of place Jackie O would have donated her things to.
If you really want a great find, this is the place for it. The prices aren't Goodwill-low but you can definitely walk out with a bargain and the stuff here is choice (name a designer and I can pretty much promise you there's something here that was from that house). Sadly, the staff here has a well-deserved reputation for rudeness whether you're buying or donating and that goes for pretty much every store they have (there are several around town). I have to steel myself when I go in here because they can be so downright nasty to people. That said, I've purchased some truly incredible things here.…see moresee less
