LOVE the V & A! Going to hit it right away when I go this spring--really, really want to see the Cecil Beaton exhibit about the Queen! Great food in the restaurant as well as a lovely room in which to eat it by the way.
Like Crown Liquor, this might be one of the top 1% of pubs in the world. The interiors here are beyond stunning; really looks like something out of a Dicken's novel.
I came across this place many years ago when, now very fashionable, Brick Lane wasn't as hip. I now come back there every time I'm around there! The place is open even very late at night so make sure you'll visit!
You know when you go on vacation and you come back and someone you know is going wherever it was you just went and they want advice and you say "OMG! OMG! You HAVE TO got here! No seriously--promise me you'll go!!!"? That's how I feel about Regency Cafe. You HAVE TO got here! No seriously--promise me you'll go!!!"? That's how I feel about Regency Cafe. It's a bit of a shlep and the guy behind the counter is notoriously rude (although not at all to me--maybe he just pours it on for travel writers), the food it great and the place is totally authentic. Well worth it.…see moresee less
Someone who really knows London well introduced me to this and I thought it was fabulous. Lots of locals were there which I think is always a good sign.
Interestingly enough they have a DNA research department here that is frequently contacted by the police for help with solving crimes. In a very famous case, Kew was able to discern what food a torso found in the Thames had consumed.
Located underground, this is definitely one of the city's more unusual attractions. If you're really into silver, this is your place. It's been in business since the late 1800s and even survived a bomb blast in WWII.
Creeping up on its 200th year in business, this is a truly elegant perfume company. The special fragrance they issued for the Queen's Jubilee this year was lovely.
The gorgeousness of the stained glass ceiling is matched by the gorgeousness of the drinks. I've never had a martini in my life like the one I had here.
When I travel, the nuttier something is, the better, so you can imagine how great I think this place is. Using the theme of Bollywood as a backdrop, it looks like the lobby of an Indian movie theater circa 1963. Be sure to check it out.
The man who owns this shop has one of the best collections of antique English jewelry I've ever seen. He really, really knows his stuff (and he's a wonderful eccentric), so if you're in the mood for a splurge (or just an interesting chat), stop by.
One of the best things about London are all the little bespoke businesses. This one, which makes men's clothing exclusively, has been around since 1908 and has a wonderfully friendly staff. They're not at their original location, but it's still worth checking out.
If the Addams Family shopped at those tacky furniture places that are always going out of business on 5th ave. in New York, it would look like the Soane house. I'm not saying it's not fun, or worth seeing, it's just occasionally lacking in the taste department for me.
