Dramatic Drives
From girlfriend getaways to big family outings, there’s something about a nice long drive that just brings people together. Here are some gorgeous places to let the rubber hit the road.
Somehow every time I've made this drive I've screwed up and ended up driving at night...and yet somehow it was still stunning. Not a ton of diversity in it (not like you'll be going through lots of towns or residential areas), but it's still gorgeous.
This runs from Seward all the way to Anchorage; 125 miles in total. You can even catch sight of Beluga whales here. Not sure if you can see Russia, though. ;)
Known to most of us as simply "The Autobahn" this system of highways has no speed limit, although most people average about 80 mph. Again, that's MOST people.
There are 99 turns in this 18-mile road and every one a doozy. In fact, if you zig when you should have zagged here you could be facing a 500-foot drop, so keep your eyes on the road! Hope you like extremes. The main highway here (called the Y-50) is all gravel, the wind is like nothing you've ever experienced before, and there ain't no rest stops. That said, if you're someone who loves the open road and a heck of a challenge, you're in for quite the treat!
This is my favorite kind of drive-seeing the fall foliage in New England. There are dozens of farms in this part of the country that have cider, pumpkins, and hay rides that are just so much fun. In fact, there's even a hotline to call to find out if the leaves have changed color yet.
Oh, would I love to do this drive! All kinds of little pubs and gardens and little fishing towns to go through. Actually thinking about doing this route next fall--going to have to learn to drive on the wrong side of the road, not to mention on a little teeny highway.
My absolutely most favorite part of the country. One thing I would caution here is that it can get really, really foggy, even during the day sometimes so make sure you know how to drive in fog. This part of the Cape has some great little hotels as well as many artists who come here to paint.
Located about 12-miles south of Historic Kailua Village (Kailua-Kona) in south Kona, Kealakekua Bay is a Marine Life Conservation District perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking. You'll literally pass golf courses, canyons, waterfalls, wildlife, and even natural ice rinks here (depending what time of year you go, of course!). Lots and lots of moose which you can see from your car!
I did the Albania-Macedonia drive last year (well, I was in the car--someone else did the driving). It's certainly a picturesque drive, although somewhat harrowing at times. If you don't mind steep drives you might want to give it a shot.

I did this drive myself in a stick car having not driven a stick in years. It's notoriously dangerous and I can see why but if you can keep your wits about you, it's a lovely drive.
This coast is actually on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. There's one stunning village after cathedral after garden after another to see here. I wouldn't stop here, but the drive to/from Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, past the Lake is beautiful. We normally take the 101 on the way up and the 154 on the way back (or vice versa).
This is an all day activity. It's a long drive. I've had a few couples almost ruin their relationship because they didn't realize how long the drive is.
This is a 68-mile stretch that's actually in the National Register of HIstoric places. You can find dozens of waterfalls along here, the Seven Sacred Sisters among them.
If you're not a resident here you have to pay to use the part of the road that's in Pebble Beach. I've done this drive myself and thought it was absolutely incredible. Well worth it.
