With a bucket of new investment, Northstar (formerly known as Flatstar) has added some great terrain and accomadations. A great family spot and the new village is worth a visit. The "reinvented" Northstar is quickly moving to the top of the list as far as Tahoe Resorts to Ski.
My favorite thing is to hike down into the crater, or go for a horseback ride through it. The most important thing to remember is this.... don't wait until you're tired to hike back to the car- because it's UP the entire way back. This is a GREAT hike and a must do in Hawaii. My favorite thing is to be there at sunrise, as there's nothing quite like it. Keep in mind it will be very cold, so take blankets from the hotel or bring a warm jacket. It can be in the 30's in the morning.
This is an all day activity. It's a long drive. I've had a few couples almost ruin their relationship because they didn't realize how long the drive is.
Unless you are really running low on souvenirs emblazoned with male genitalia (and who isn't?) and/or non-descript leather bags, there's no reason to allow a lot of time here. It's a tourist trap and a dull one at that. Rub the nose of Il Porcellino for luck and kicks and be done with it.
