No, sorry, these aren't full of chocolate as the name implies! They're actually named the chocolate hills because of their chocolate color. Legend has it that the hills were formed from brothers throwing rocks at each other.
For some reason I had always assumed these were man made but they're actually natural. Sadly, though, their beauty has meant people in the area have focused on the tourism of the terraces and not the preservation of them.

This may look doctored but it's actually not. The glow of this body of water is created by micro-organisms that are half-plant, half-animal and apparently go a little nuts at night. Somehow the result of their nutty-ness is this blue glow.

Pretty amazing place, would highly recommend going and also the hike around the Volcano. The last time it erupted, it destroyed life in the Southern Hemisphere, so don't piss it off.

I love this town. Bought jade necklaces, day tripped to Taupo, went to the Spa and swam in the naturally heated outdoor pool in winter. Love the black swans in the lake. Got some gorgeous pictures at the end of the day.
Wild mix of boiling earth and London-esque flower gardens. Beware of Kerosene Creek, cool place, but the odds of getting your car broken into are very high. I was warned, tried to be careful, and still got robbed
